Diesel Heater E03 Fault Code: Undervoltage — Diagnosis and Fix

08 Oct 2026

Short answer: E03 on an HLN diesel heater means the supply voltage has been too low for at least 20 seconds. On 8kW rotary-switch models without a screen, the same fault is flashed as blink code 00011. This is the most common code on tired batteries and undersized wiring — the heater protects the battery by refusing to run.

Voltage limits — air and coolant heaters differ

  • Air heaters (Aerolyn 2kW / 4kW / 8kW): voltage must stay above 10 V on a 12 V heater, and above 21 V on a 24 V heater.
  • Coolant heaters (Aquano 5K / 10K / 12K / 15K): voltage must stay above 10 V on a 12 V heater, and above 20 V on a 24 V heater.

In every case the wiring-harness voltage drop must not exceed 1 V — the voltage at the heater should be close to battery voltage.

Factory diagnosis

  1. Measure voltage at the heater, before and after starting. At start-up it should equal battery voltage; in normal operation it should stay close to it. A big gap means the drop is in your wiring, not your battery.
  2. Check fuses, connections and wiring for damage; check battery terminals for corrosion and proper contact.
  3. Check the vehicle charging system (alternator output) and correct any problems.
  4. If the measured voltage is actually normal and E03 still appears, replace the ECU.

FAQ

The battery reads fine at rest but E03 appears at ignition — why?
Ignition is the highest-draw phase (glow pin heating). A weak battery or thin supply wires can hold 12.5 V at rest yet sag below 10 V under that load. Measure at the heater's connector during start-up, not at the battery at rest.

Will a bigger battery fix E03?
Only if the battery is actually the weak point. If the voltage at the battery stays healthy but the heater sees less, the fix is the wiring: shorten the run, increase the wire gauge, and clean every connection — the drop must stay under 1 V.

My 8kW heater has no screen — how do I see this code?
Count the status-light flashes: E03 is 00011 — three short then two long (long = 1, short = 0).
