HLN Aquano vs Espar Hydronic: Coolant Heater Comparison for Trucks and Vans

20 Apr 2026

If you need a coolant heater — also known as a hydronic heater — to preheat your engine, defrost your windshield, and heat your cabin without idling, two options stand out: the Espar (Eberspacher) Hydronic series and the HLN Aquano series. Both are OEM-grade systems used by major vehicle manufacturers, but they differ significantly in price, smart features, and model range.

What coolant heaters do

Unlike air heaters that blow warm air directly into the cabin, coolant heaters warm the engine's coolant fluid. This preheats the engine block before you turn the key, which eliminates the damaging effects of cold starts — thick oil, poor lubrication, increased emissions, and accelerated engine wear.

The warm coolant also flows through the vehicle's heater core, providing cabin heat through the existing vents. And when connected to a heat exchanger, coolant heaters can supply domestic hot water for van life or marine applications.

Model range comparison

The HLN Aquano series covers three power levels: the Aquano 5K (5kW, 12V), the Aquano 10K (10kW, 12V), and the Aquano 20K (20kW, 24V). This range spans from small van engines to heavy Class 8 truck engines.

The Espar Hydronic series includes the Hydronic S3 (available in 4kW and 5kW) and larger models for commercial applications. The product range is comparable, though specific model availability varies by region.

Smart controls

Every HLN Aquano ships with a WiFi digital controller that connects to the SmartLife phone app. You can schedule the heater to turn on before your morning departure, set target temperatures, and create recurring weekly schedules — all from your phone. This is included in the purchase price.

Espar offers the EasyStart system for remote control, which is a well-designed solution. However, it is typically purchased separately, adding to the total cost of ownership.

For fleet managers running multiple vehicles, the ability to schedule preheating cycles remotely through a phone app can save significant time during winter operations.

Pricing

This is where the comparison becomes straightforward. The HLN Aquano 5K is priced at $659 (on sale from $699) including the complete installation kit and WiFi controller. The Aquano 10K is $849, and the Aquano 20K is $1,099 — all with installation kits and controllers included.

Espar Hydronic units typically retail between $1,200 and $2,500 depending on the model and configuration, with remote control accessories sold separately.

The HLN Aquano delivers comparable OEM-grade quality at roughly 40 to 60 percent less than Espar's retail pricing.

Build quality and certification

Both HLN and Espar build heaters to OEM standards. HLN heaters carry E-mark certification under ECE R122 and are factory-installed by Fortune 500 truck manufacturers. Espar heaters are similarly certified and widely used as OEM equipment in European commercial vehicles.

In terms of engineering quality and durability, the two brands are on equal footing. Both are designed for the demanding requirements of commercial vehicle applications.

Parts and service

Espar has an established service network, particularly strong in Europe and growing in North America. Finding an authorized Espar service center is relatively straightforward in most major markets.

HLN Aquano heaters use fuel pumps that are compatible with standard Espar/Eberspacher parts, which means replacement components are widely available through the same parts distributors. This cross-compatibility is a practical advantage for owners who want accessible maintenance options.

Recommendation

For fleet operators, full-time van dwellers, boat owners, and anyone who needs reliable engine preheating, the HLN Aquano series offers the best value in the coolant heater market. You get OEM-grade engineering, WiFi smartphone control, and a complete installation kit at a price point that is significantly lower than comparable Espar products.

If your organization has an existing relationship with an Espar service center and wants to standardize on their ecosystem, the Espar Hydronic remains a proven choice — just at a higher cost.
