Diesel Heater E14 Fault Code: Flame-Out During Operation — Diagnosis and Fix

08 Oct 2026

Short answer: E14 on an HLN coolant heater (Aquano 5K / 10K / 12K / 15K) means combustion was interrupted during operation — the heater started successfully, then the flame went out. The blink-code equivalent is 01110. It is usually a fuel-supply problem, not a failed part.

What E14 means

Unlike E13 (which means the heater never ignited), E14 means ignition succeeded and the flame later died. That points to something that changed while running: fuel ran low, air got into the fuel line, the combustion air path became restricted, or — on coolant heaters — the water circulation faltered.

Factory diagnosis — in order

  1. Check the fuel level in the tank — refuel if low. This is the most common cause.
  2. Perform the fuel quantity test (service manual procedure) to confirm the pump is delivering the correct amount.
  3. Inspect the fuel lines for air bubbles — tighten the fuel line connections to eliminate air leaks.
  4. Check the combustion air intake and exhaust for obstructions.
  5. Verify the fuel grade matches the temperature — summer diesel gels in deep cold and starves the flame.
  6. Check the glow pin — resistance within specification and properly mounted.
  7. Check the water side: water pump running, coolant level and quality, circulation pipe valve open, water pipes free of restriction or blockage.
  8. If all the above check out, replace the flame sensor; test the ECU and replace it if necessary.

FAQ

How is E14 different from E13?
E13 = the heater failed to ignite after two attempts (never started). E14 = it ignited, then the flame went out. The diagnosis overlaps but starts from different suspects — see the E13 guide.

It only happens in very cold weather — why?
Check the fuel grade first: standard summer diesel begins to gel below freezing, restricting flow until the flame starves. Use winter diesel appropriate for your temperatures.

Is E14 the same on other heater brands?
No. Fault-code tables are brand-specific — this table applies to HLN heaters only.
