Diesel Heater E18 Fault Code: Glow Pin Open Circuit — Diagnosis and Fix

08 Oct 2026

Short answer: E18 on an HLN diesel heater means the ECU has detected an open circuit on the glow pin (ignition plug) — its resistance reads too high or the circuit is broken. On 8kW rotary-switch models without a screen, the same fault is flashed as blink code 10010. The fix: replace the plug and re-tighten the connections.

Glow pin resistance specifications (at 20 °C)

  • Air heaters (Aerolyn 2kW / 4kW / 8kW): 12 V — 0.42 to 0.7 Ω; 24 V — 1.2 to 2.0 Ω
  • Coolant heaters (Aquano 5K / 10K / 12K / 15K): 12 V — 0.4 to 0.6 Ω; 24 V — 1.2 to 2.0 Ω

The 12 V ranges differ slightly between air and coolant platforms — use the range for your heater type.

Factory diagnosis

  1. Remove the glow pin and check continuity. An open reading (or resistance far above the range) means the plug has failed — replace it and re-tighten all connections.
  2. Check the glow pin harness for damage, correct routing and secure connection; check the harness for continuity.
  3. If the plug and harness both test fine, test the ECU and replace it if necessary.

FAQ

What's the difference between E18 and E19?
E18 is an open circuit (no current path); E19 is a short circuit / current too high. Same component, opposite electrical failure — see the E19 guide.

My multimeter reads 0.5 Ω — is that a fail on an air heater?
0.5 Ω is inside the coolant-heater range (0.4–0.6) but marginal against the air-heater range (0.42–0.7 — it passes). Note that cheap multimeters struggle below 1 Ω: zero the leads first (touch them together and subtract that reading).

My 8kW heater has no screen — how do I see this code?
Count the status-light flashes: E18 is 10010 — one long, two short, one long, one short (long = 1, short = 0).
