HLN Aerolyn vs Webasto Airtop: An Honest Comparison for Van Life and RV Heating

08 Apr 2026

If you are shopping for a diesel air heater for your van, campervan, or RV, you have probably come across two names: Webasto and HLN. Webasto has been the default recommendation for years, but HLN — a 50-year OEM manufacturer — has been gaining serious traction among van lifers and overlanders who want OEM-grade quality without the Webasto price tag.

This article compares the HLN Aerolyn series directly against the Webasto Airtop series across the factors that actually matter: heating performance, build quality, smart controls, altitude capability, parts availability, and price.

Company background

Webasto is a well-known German automotive supplier that has manufactured vehicle heating systems since the 1930s. Their Airtop series is widely used in the European aftermarket.

HLN has been manufacturing diesel heaters as factory-installed original equipment for Fortune 500 truck, bus, and construction vehicle manufacturers for over 50 years. Their heaters are E-mark certified under ECE R122 and installed on vehicles operating across Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and the Americas. The key difference is that HLN heaters are built to OEM specifications, not just aftermarket standards.

Heating performance

Both the HLN Aerolyn 2000 PRO (2kW) and the Webasto Airtop 2000 STC (2kW) are designed for spaces up to about 20 cubic meters. For larger spaces, the HLN Aerolyn 4000 PRO delivers 4kW, comparable to the Webasto Airtop Evo 40.

Both brands operate effectively down to approximately -40°F (-40°C). In terms of raw heating output, the two are closely matched at equivalent power ratings.

Motor and durability

This is where the HLN Aerolyn gains a clear advantage. The Aerolyn PRO models use brushless fan motors rated for over 5,000 hours of operation. Brushless motors produce less noise, generate less heat, and last significantly longer than brushed motors.

Many budget diesel heaters — and even some mid-range models — use brushed motors with typical lifespans around 2,000 hours. The brushless motor in the Aerolyn PRO series is the same type used in OEM truck installations where reliability is non-negotiable.

Altitude adjustment

The HLN Aerolyn 4000 PRO features automatic altitude adjustment up to 16,000 feet (5,000 meters). The 2000 PRO adjusts automatically up to 10,000 feet (3,000 meters). This means the heater detects altitude changes and adjusts its fuel-air mixture without any manual intervention.

Webasto Airtop models also offer altitude adjustment, but you should verify the specific model's rated altitude ceiling before purchasing if you plan to use it in mountainous areas.

For anyone who travels to ski resorts, high mountain passes, or high-altitude construction sites, this is a meaningful difference.

Smart controls

HLN heaters ship with WiFi digital control panels that connect to the SmartLife phone app. You can start and stop the heater, set target temperatures, and schedule automatic on/off times for each day of the week — all from your smartphone. Bluetooth controller options are also available.

Webasto offers the ThermoCall system for remote control, which is a capable solution but typically costs extra and requires a separate purchase.

Parts availability

HLN Aerolyn heaters are compatible with standard Espar/Eberspacher fuel pumps, which are widely available through automotive parts distributors. This means you can source replacement parts easily without being locked into a proprietary supply chain.

Webasto parts are available through Webasto's dealer network, which is extensive in Europe but can be more limited in some parts of North America.

Price comparison

The HLN Aerolyn 2000 PRO and 4000 PRO are both priced at $699, which includes the complete installation kit, WiFi controller, mounting hardware, and all necessary components. No additional purchases are required.

Webasto Airtop heaters typically retail between $1,100 and $1,800 depending on the model and configuration, and some accessories like remote controls are sold separately.

This means the HLN Aerolyn delivers OEM-grade quality at roughly 30 to 50 percent less than comparable Webasto products.

Which one should you choose?

Choose the HLN Aerolyn if you want OEM-grade build quality, a brushless motor with 5,000+ hour lifespan, built-in WiFi phone control, high-altitude capability, and a complete installation kit — all at a significantly lower price point.

Choose Webasto if you prioritize the brand's established dealer network in your specific region, or if your installer has specific experience with Webasto systems and prefers to work with them.

Both are capable heaters. The HLN Aerolyn simply offers more features and equivalent durability for substantially less money.
