What is the difference between HLN WiFi and Bluetooth controllers, 2025
HLN air and hydronic heaters connect to a phone app called Smart Life, so you can control your heater from your phone. The HLN control panel itself has all the control functions; the app is an extra option that lets you control the heater remotely.

WiFi controller
The WiFi controller needs a WiFi network where the heater is installed. On the control panel, press ‘Reset’ in the ‘WiFi’ section. Then open the Smart Life app: it will find the heater and ask you to choose the network and enter its password. Once connected, you can control the heater from your phone wherever you are — your phone does not need to be on the same WiFi network as the heater.

Bluetooth controller
The Bluetooth controller only needs Bluetooth turned on on your phone; the app will then find your heater. The connection has a limited range — usually around 30 ft / 10 m — and the building you are in and where the heater is mounted can shorten it.
Timer
With the WiFi controller you can set the ‘Timer’ function from the app. With the Bluetooth controller you cannot (as of 2025). The reason: when you use the app, the timer signal is sent from your phone, not from the control panel, so a Bluetooth phone that is out of range could miss the moment the heater should start or stop.
These differences between the WiFi and Bluetooth controllers apply to both HLN Aerolyn air heaters and Aquano hydronic heaters.
