Diesel Heater E21 Fault Code: Blower Motor Short Circuit — Test Before You Replace
Short answer: E21 on an HLN diesel heater means the ECU measured excessive current on the blower motor circuit — a stalled or internally shorted motor. On 8kW rotary-switch models the blink code is 10101. One measurement separates a bad motor from a bad ECU: do it before ordering parts.
Step 1: look for the mechanical cause first
A jammed fan draws heavy current and mimics a shorted motor. Check the impeller for foreign objects and free rotation, and check the wiring for chafed or pinched sections. Also check the heater is mounted on a flat surface — an uneven floor can pinch the housing and stall the motor when the mounting bolts are tightened.
Step 2: the current test (air heaters)
Apply the test voltage directly to the blower — 8 V for a 12 V heater, 18 V for a 24 V heater — and measure the current draw:
- Current under 6.5 A: the motor is not the problem — test the ECU and replace it if necessary.
- Current over 6.5 A: the motor is drawing short-circuit current — replace the blower motor.
Reference speeds at the test voltage: 2 kW (Aerolyn 2000) ≈ 5000 rpm ±25%; 4 kW (Aerolyn 4000) ≈ 4400 rpm ±25%.
Coolant (hydronic) heaters
The same logic with different thresholds. 12 V models: less than 2.0 A → test the ECU; more → replace the blower. 24 V models: the threshold is 1.1 A.
FAQ
The fan does not spin at all — is that E21?
A motor that does not rotate at all usually reports E29 (speed below 300 rpm) rather than E21. E21 is about excessive current.
Can a blocked air duct cause E21?
Restricted ducting typically causes overheating faults (E27) rather than motor overcurrent — but a physically jammed impeller absolutely can.
My 8kW heater has no screen — how do I see this code?
Count the status-light flashes: 10101 — long, short, long, short, long (long = 1, short = 0).
